Alligator Weed Public Appeal
Alligator weed - a public appeal for any information
You probably never suspected that your backyard could be harbouring a menacing alien. Yes, a green one! (Of course.)
Without going into detail (and loosing your attention right here and now ... please keep reading), alligator weed is one of the most invasive weeds in Australia, threatening all sorts of economic and environmental havoc. The infestations within the ACT must be controlled to prevent it spreading merrily down the stream, all the way to Adelaide.
In Canberra the source of this nationally significant super weed is people's backyards. From these it makes its escape into the stormwater system and ultimately creeks and rivers.
So dear colleagues, take these pictures and check your garden!
Take a really really (really) good look at the suspect and compare it with the picture because there are a lot of similar looking species out there. (We don't want to know about those ones)
If you suspect you have alligator weed, call Canberra Connect - 13 22 81
A PCL officer will confirm its identity and remove it free of charge to residents.
Happy hunting!
